Résumé : | Agriculture is the backbone of the Ethiopian economy. However, it has not been productive enough to ensure farm households food security. Hence the promotion of RNFE, in addition to farm activities, seems indispensable to alleviate rural poverty. The purpose of this study was therefore to review empirical literatures on the nature and determinants of Rural Non-farm Economy (RNFE) in rural Ethiopia. The review result shows that the RNF sector is already of great importance to rural employment effects. Currently, the average participation rate of rural household in the sector is significant, which accounts about 25 percent. There is some evidence that the participation rate in to the sector has grown over the last three decades. The most prominent RNFE sub-sector is trading, closely followed by manufacturing and services. Most of the sector activities is characterized by traditional artisanal skills, petty trading, manual or domestic labour predominate, low entry barriers, low return rate and seasonal. Poor households and women are most involved in RNFE activities due to distress-push factors. The share of RNF income to the total household income is about 25-40 percent. Women are more likely to be engaged in nonfarm activities than men, especially in small towns. Participation rate in RNFE is mainly influenced by demographic factors, including age of household head, gender of the head of the households, dependency ratio, and number of female household members. In addition, it is also affected by determinants like the size of land holdings, value of livestock owned and crop production as well as cash income from crop production. Agricultural growth is an important requirement for non-farm activities growth because many non-farm goods and services are non-tradable. In short, the rural non-farm sector is not a pathway out of poverty in the country, but rather provides income-earnings opportunities to those lacking alternative options. Policymakers therefore, should capitalize on the complementarities between agriculture and the nonfarm sector so that the sector can be a pathway out of poverty. |
