Kerkennah Islands: coastal and rural regions attractiveness

The study trip in the Occitanie region ended at the CIHEAM Montpellier institute on February 7, 2020, with a working meeting followed by a conference with stakeholders from the three visited territories and representatives from the Occitania Region.

The issues of the Kerkennah Islands and the activities to come within the framework of the TERRI’COOP and DEVLOK projects were at the heart of the discussions.

The two projects through which these meetings took place fall within the priorities of CIHEAM Montpellier:

  • Zero waste, whether in terms of food, natural resources, or knowledge
  • Sustainable agricultural and food systems
  • Attractive rural and coastal areas to live and work there
  • The resilience of Mediterranean agro-systems.

The DEVLOK project aims to strengthen the maritime, agricultural and rural economy of the Kerkennah Islands (Tunisia) by promoting the emergence of economic and social projects based on the sustainable development of the local resources of the islands, and in particular its specific resources, for the benefit of the entire population.

The TERRI’COOP project, for its part, sets up inter-territorial cooperation between actors in the Occitania Region and the Kerkennaha Islands, to support the sustainable development of economic sectors in the coastal areas of these two regions.
