Résumé : | The United Nations have set a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to halve food waste per capita by 2030. As a consequence, more and more countries have joined the fight against food waste: voluntary agreements are set up, policies are reconsidered and consumer campaigns are launched. Especially consumer food waste reduction receives attention, as in developed countries most food is wasted in the household (Xue et al., 2017). In examining this, both scholars and practitioners tend to treat consumer food waste as a stand-alone issue and give relatively little attention to how it is embedded in the broader context in which food waste takes place. More precisely, prior research has focused on identifying food-waste related consumer behaviours and the personal and product-related determinants of food waste (Roodhuyzen et al., 2017), but often do not connect them to the other food-related goals consumers have, the organisation of our food chain, or the overarching goal to which reducing consumer food waste is expected to contribute. This perspective paper will discuss why scholars and practitioners should investigate and aim to understand consumer food waste within its complex web of food-related goals, and why they should broaden their view to examine the food system as a whole... |
