Résumé : | This review analyzes the evolution of the economic valuation of environmental assets and services as a succession of paradigms, which we identify as (i) valuation of the environment, (ii) valuation of ecosystem services, and (iii) natural capital accountability. In this evolution, the field has moved from an academic, supply-driven approach to an operative, market-oriented one, in which more and more often institutions and businesses are being held accountable for their impacts on natural capital. Aims, techniques, and methods have been adapted to the evolution of needs. The concept of value itself has shifted from ontological to responsible, moving the focus from notional worth to impacts, dependencies, and decision-making. |
