| Résumé : | Agricultural intensification in the Mediterranean regions has increased productivity but led to high levels of nitrogen leaching, threatening water resources and the sustainability of household farming systems. Within the scope of NPP-SOL project, this study aims to evaluate strategies to reduce nitrogen leaching, without affecting farm profitability in two Mediterranean areas: the Italian Arborea plain, Italy and the Arba basin, Spain. Using the DAHBSIM bioeconomic model. The results of calibration show that the model is realistic to real farm conditions. Simulating the reference scenarios (business-as-usual) shows a decrease in sustainable indicators over time. Qualitative results help to put hypotheses that indicate that either site specific best management practices (BMPs) or pollution preventing technologies (PPTs) alone can reduce nitrogen leaching with lower productivity. However, by combining these two scenarios with an incentive policy the simulation shows less nitrogen with higher productivity. This study illustrates that the integration of the bioeconomic model with alternative scenarios and incentive policies, supports predicting the future situation at the farm-level and provides advice to farmers while minimizing nitrogen leaching without affecting their profitability. |
