| Résumé : | The GRANULAR project has developed, tested, validated, and scaled a suite of novel datasets, indicators, and analytical methods designed to improve understanding of the diversity and dynamics of rural areas across Europe. Recognising that existing official statistics often lack the spatial and thematic granularity required for effective place-based rural policy, the project combined open data, Earth observation, crowdsourced information, social media-derived mobility data, citizen science approaches, and advanced artificial intelligence methods to generate new evidence on accessibility, mobility, rural economies, land use, and rural attractiveness. Validation was conducted through comparisons with official datasets, statistical assessments, local stakeholder engagement, citizen science campaigns, and extensive testing across seven Living Labs and nine Replication Labs representing diverse rural contexts throughout Europe. This iterative process enabled the refinement of methods and ensured that outputs were both scientifically robust and relevant to local decision-makers. The results demonstrate the significant potential of novel data sources and open analytical frameworks to complement traditional statistics and support rural policy development. Key outputs include European-scale accessibility indicators, mobility and connectivity metrics derived from social media data, innovative approaches to measuring economic diversity and housing market dynamics, AI-enabled land-use monitoring tools based on Sentinel-2 satellite imagery, and new methods for assessing landscape attractiveness and tourism behaviour. Many of the resulting datasets, workflows, visualisation tools, and models have been released through the GRANULAR Zenodo Community to promote transparency, reproducibility, and uptake by researchers, policymakers, and rural stakeholders. Despite challenges related to data completeness, representativeness, privacy constraints, and varying regional contexts, the project demonstrates that integrating novel data sources with participatory validation processes can substantially enhance the evidence base available for supporting Europes rural transitions and implementing more effective, place-sensitive rural policies. |
