| Résumé : | The Portuguese government has planned to irrigate 30 thousand hectares of land in the Alentejo region within 2006. About 26 thousand hectares are part of the Alqueva Project. This paper anticipates the main trends and perspectives of irrigated agriculture in the Alentejo region with respect to production options, farm income and resource use and returns. The methodology used is based on a discrete stochastic programming model that maximizes the producers' expected utility. It is a farm level model which includes the main structural characteristics of farm types and irrigated agricultural production options as well as different types of years for crop water use and total availability for farmers. Results show that irrigated agriculture development is a potential option to promote agricultural competitiveness, incomes and resources returns of farmers that benefit from those public investments in irrigated structures in the Alentejo region |
