Résumé : | CERES-Maize, a comprehensive crop growth model, was modified for assessing crop response to irrigation with saline waters. The model assumes the hypothesis that saline stress can be simulated as water stress because of a reduction of actual evapotranspiration. The effects of water status on the principal functions of the plant (photosynthesis, development, growth and production) are simulated in CERES-Maize by the water stress coefficients, calculated from the soil water balance. The modified model takes on account of the salinity effects on the crop in two ways: a) introducing the osmotic effect and b) changing the definition of the water-salinity stress a function of leaf water potential measured at predawn. Comparison with lysimeter data showed that the model could predict the effect of irrigation with saline waters on the biomass accumulation and on grain yield. The largest deviations from the observations were observed in the less stressed saline treatment, because the model simulated a too severe stress. More experimental evidence needs to improve the model |
