Résumé : | There are numerous socio-economic problems facing Turkey and member partner countries (MPC) at the current time. Significant unemployment coupled with a growing number of new entrants arriving into the labour market has led to a situation where new sources of employment and growth are needed for the region. Demographics are radically changing in the region where rural actors leave their holdings to settle in urban areas, often leading to a shift of poverty from the countryside to the cities rather than providing new opportunities for employment and income. In addition to these socio‐economic problems facing the region, there is a structural change taking place in global agro-food chains where chain competitiveness defines the success of countries to claim their place in what is typically being defined by a small number of international players. For Turkey to capitalize on the opportunities these global agro-food chains provide, a new focus on improving competitiveness is required. The main objective of this report is to use a newly developed methodology, Global Value Chain Analysis (GVCA), to assess opportunities and bottlenecks in Turkeys fresh orange sector. The methodology used in this report has been adapted from a single case study approach towards a sectoral level of analysis. As a result, the implementation of the methodology also serves as a testing ground where methodological improvements can be made from the lessons learnt in its application. |
