Résumé : | Insect pollination plays a major role into the production of many crops including kiwi, which requires high level of pollination in order to produce appropriate fruit weight eligible for export. Until recently, one European study has explored the attitude of farmers and beekeepers towards pollination service. In this research, using paired surveys, 47 kiwi producers and 34 beekeepers from the region of Kavala, Greece were investigated for the purpose of understanding their perceptions and attitude about pollination. More than half of the farmers surveyed believed they had pollination service shortage and hired beehives from local beekeepers as well as professional bumblebee hives to support their production in exchange for payments and reduced pesticide use. On the other hand, beekeepers favorite tree was pine, for the high honey yield and high quality, as well as kiwi since they receive payments in return. In addition, when it comes to provision of hives for pollination purposes beekeepers primary concern was higher payments and reduced pesticide use. Despite the multiple findings that were obtained, which encourages a future and a better collaboration between the two groups, this study is still limited by knowledge gaps that can further affect future results. |
