Résumé : | This work is a quantification of nitrogen (N) flows in poultry production at the scale of the Brittany region and connects feed consumption with feed importations and land use. By combining recent estimates on animal feeding at the French scale, literature data and regional agricultural statistics, the analysis provides a methodology for reconstructing feed rations and associated material flows for all poultry categories at the regional scale. Brittany produces 12 kilo tonnes of nitrogen (ktN) of poultry products per year which accounts for 22% of national production. Our results show that human edible N conversion efficiency is estimated at 21% for meat producing poultry, followed by layers at 17% and fattened poultry at 9%. We show that soybean cake account for 45% of the N feed intake for meat producing poultry. Land use required to feed the whole poultry sector in Brittany is estimated at 0.6 million hectares (Mha), which is equivalent to 37% of all agricultural area of the region. More than 21% of this land use is abroad and mainly in Brazil for soybean imports. |
