Résumé : | The growing world population, climate change and fast economic and socio-economic development has put a big pressure on water, energy and food. The WEFE Index aim to explores the interlinkage of water, energy, food, and ecosystems (WEFE) at the farm level to support the sustainability in agricultural practices. Our case study was in grape farm in Lleida, Spain, the study assesses the link between these key resources by calculating 5 indicators: water, carbon, and energy footprints, farm productivity and income. Data collection included specific information such as yield, water, energy consumption, and input usage. The indicators have been calculated using the General Algebraic Modelling System (GAMS) and normalized and weighted to create a WEFE Nexus Index (WEFENI), an index to assess farm sustainability. Results show that the WEFE index varies between different farm zones, with higher index in mid and high zones, Provide suggestions for more sustainable practices. The study shows how the WEFE index can help farmers balance trade-offs between environmental sustainability and economic profitability, provide valuable information for decision making. It found that the integration of the WEFE Nexus into farm management enhances resource efficiency, helping farms achieve long-term sustainability under the increasing pressure on global water, energy, and food resources. |
