Résumé : | In general, clearings constitute one of the numerous threats for forests and natural vegetation. The problem is more intense in the coastal zone of Pelion. Related activities like plowing vertically to the contours and eliminating hedgerows, create erosion and disturbance of natural habitats. Although numerous cases of clearings occur every year in Pelion, the total cleared area is small. Awareness of farmers and more strict legislation enforcement are proposed. In Pelion, 4000 families are involved in olive-tree cultivation, half of them exclusively. Protection of olive-tree production includes these of strong insecticides by air and ground spraying. The use of 2 tons insecticide annually in Pelionis dangerous for human health, water bodies and ground water quality, wildlife and non-target species, agriculture etc. Obviously alternative protection techniques are needed. There are already positive results by using specific traps and biological control methods of harmful insects in olive tree groves in the area. More research on the above methods and awareness of farmers are needed to protect olive-tree production and environment |
