Protection of knowledge – patents, geographical indications, labels – institutionalizes inter-connexions of living beings while defining what is appropriable and exploitable
These instruments of intellectual property rights emanate from international or national regimes (World Trade Organization or Biodiversity Convention) and generate interdependence links with the local organization practices which come with their specific protection forms (environmental chart, rights of indigenous peoples, etc.).
The main issue is to understand which power relations are implemented at different scales and to analyze the equilibrium between private property and collective action.
Objectives:
- Analyzing the conditions for the emergence of intellectual property rights regimes;
- Analyzing the power relations between States and Markets;
- Analyzing the conditions for collective action.
Methods:
- Establishing regular and distinct datasets for the analysis of power-knowledge places
- Building of spatial and time scales, including the creation of interdisciplinary bridges
- Analyzing the places for expression and institutionalization of the protection of knowledge and know-how forms
- Knowledge capitalizing through different objects, from international negotiations to the schemes aimed at reputation property or collective action
