“Culture is a universal bond.”
Within the framework of the Master’s course “Sustainable Farming and Pollinator Habitat Restoration for Biodiversity and Food Security” (SPHERE) organized by University of Freiburg (ALU-FR) and CIHEAM-IAMM, and in alignment with the objectives of the Horizon Europe projects RESTPOLL and BUTTERFLY, a study trip and joint workshop in Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany) and surrounding region was organized for students from Master MIDAS (CIHEAM-IAMM) and students from ALU-FR from the 24th to the 27th March 2026. This activity contributes to strengthening the link between teaching, research, and Living Lab activities while reinforcing the cross-project learning dynamics between RESTPOLL and BUTTERFLY projects on sharing thematical issues of pollinator-supporting practices and biodiversity-friendly farming systems.
The students were accompanied and guided by experts from RESTPOLL and BUTTERFLY projects team (Henning Nottebrock and Amibeth Thompson from ALU-FR; Georgios Kleftodimos and Amélie Bourceret from CIHEAM-IAMM). During the study trip and workshop, students had the opportunity to: visit Wild Bee Garden (NABU) & bee show with Felix Fornoff (Assistant professor at University of Freiburg) for observations and learning about pollinator-friendly farming practices; develop and present the posters and policy briefs in front of members from the Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development. This was also a great networking event for researchers and students from both institutions and projects.
