Just released: the first MED-Amin bulletin on 2024 harvest forecasting in the Mediterranean region!
This bulletin gives an overview of cereal crops’ evolution in the Mediterranean region, as well as early qualitative forecasting of the 2023-2024 campaign, with particular focus on soft wheat, durum wheat and barley.

Winter anomalies primarily impacting the western MED-Amin regions: The start into the 2024 cereal campaign was predominantly affected by prolonged dry weather conditions in the Western Mediterranean region. Winter cereals in Western Maghreb are already been hampered. However, crops in the Iberian Peninsula have recovered, following significant and well distributed rainfall since mid-January. Over-wet conditions have hindered normal planting and agronomic operations in the Atlantic regions of France, and to a lesser extent in Italy. Conversely, crop conditions are generally favourable in other Mediterranean regions, with a positive outlook so far.

MED-Amin network, gathering 13 Mediterranean countries and coordinated by the CIHEAM, aims to reduce prices volatility in agricultural markets. This initiative lays the foundation for an early warning system strengthening food security in the region.

Med-Amin celebrates its 10th birthday.

Recent years have seen the Covid-19 pandemic, soaring prices for agricultural inputs, and the conflict in Ukraine, all of which have led to heightened geopolitical and commercial tensions. In this highly sensitive context, particularly for countries already suffering the consequences of climate change with violent and sometimes recurrent meteorological events, the MEDAmin network has been able to speak with a Mediterranean voice. It has succeeded in bringing together the region’s stakeholders, continuing the gradual construction of early warning tools to better anticipate crises and dealing with them when they arise or become chronic. 

Thanks to the remarkable work of its National Focal Points and associated partner organizations, the MED-Amin network has gradually managed to consolidate its achievements during this turbulent period, and to strengthen dialogue and trust, as well as decision-making and monitoring systems (…) 🔎 to be continued online.

The University Fan S. Noli of Korça, represented by Pr Aldona Minga, Pr Dorjan Marku and Pr Ilir Sosoli, Head of Department, is visiting CIHEAM Montpellier: an opportunity to exchange on the content of the master’s programs offered at CIHEAM Montpellier and to promote student and staff mobilities under the Albania ERASMUS+ project (Magali Maire, Project coordinator).

The “MIDAS” Master and the organization of the LAMES doctoral platform (Hatem Belhouchette, Amélie Bourceret, Georgios Kleftodimos), sustainable agri-food value chains (Pr Paolo Prosperi) “CDVALES” Master and cartographic analysis applied to a territory in the context of climate change-GIS (Pr Tristan Berchoux) “CGAT” Master were adressed with a view to organizing training courses in Montpellier and Korça (Albania) in the coming months.
