CIHEAM Montpellier: A Significant Step Towards an Office in Lebanon

Reposted on September 12, 2024

On Wednesday 12 June, the Lebanese Minister of Agriculture, His Excellency Abbas Hadj Hassan, and the Director of CIHEAM Montpellier, Thierry Dupeuble, signed an agreement paving the way for the forthcoming opening of an office in Beirut. The agreement marks the culmination of years of cooperation between the Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture and CIHEAM Montpellier, in support of the development of agro-ecology in Lebanon.

Following on from the HASAD project, CIHEAM Montpellier is currently supporting farmers in northern Bekaa in the adoption of agroecological practices and more general changes to their production systems as part of the SUPMED project. The very promising results of this project have led CIHEAM Montpellier to consider extending the approach to other regions of Lebanon, with the support of Fair Trade Lebanon and Action contre la Faim, and the financial backing of the Agence française de développement (AFD): the ARADINA project is due to be signed shortly and to start at the end of 2024.

CIHEAM Montpellier has also applied for other project calls, the results of which will be known soon. The expansion of activities in Lebanon will thus be facilitated by the opening of this office, likely in the fall.

Kick-off DIONYSUS Project

We are delighted to announce the successful launch of the DIONYSUS project! After a year of intense preparation, a consortium of 14 outstanding partners from France, Egypt, Germany, Greece, Morocco, Algeria, Italy, Tunisia and Turkey met on 1 and 2 July 2024 at CIHEAM Montpellier to officially launch this groundbreaking initiative funded by the European Union as part of the PRIMA partnership (Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area).

This project seeks to co-design, test and develop cross-sectoral adaptation solutions, using an approach based on the Nexus concept, in representative regions of the Mediterranean that produce essential agricultural products. The results of this project will help to shape policies that will strengthen the Mediterranean region’s long-term capacity to adapt to diminishing resources.
