“Trees and Forests in the Face of Global Changes: Reflections and Recommendations from the 10th PARMENIDES Conference”

Posted on November 13, 2023

The  Groupe Interacadémique pour le Développement (GID) and the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), with the support of the Académie des Sciences de France, the Académie d’Agriculture de France, the European Forest Institute (EFI) and the technical support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), organised the 10th PARMENIDES Conference at the CIHEAM Institute in Chania (Greece) from 24 to 26 October 2023, entitled “Trees and Forests in the Face of Global Change: Mediterranean Countries at the Forefront”.

In a Mediterranean region marked by climate change and qualified as a mosaic in its environmental, socio-demographic, and economic dimensions, the speakers discussed three major questions: How can Mediterranean forest and tree ecosystems and their evolutionary potential be strengthened? How can we optimize their management in favor of the multiple goods and services they generate, in synergy with the agricultural, pastoral, tourism, and cultural sectors, as well as with civil society? And finally, how can we respond to the climatic and societal challenges facing Mediterranean forests?

While the challenges faced by Mediterranean countries to ensure the future of their wooded areas are considerable (degradation, desertification, wildfires, underestimated bioeconomic approach, insufficient consideration of local communities, etc.), there are numerous ongoing developments toward greater sustainability, durability, and inclusivity.

Over fifty representatives from intergovernmental organizations, academies, universities, research centers, ministries, and civil society actors called for strengthened cooperation for Mediterranean forests in the face of global changes.

Through the example of “agdals,” a collectively decided conservation practice by Berber populations in the Maghreb, Omar Bessaoud (Economist, CIHEAM-Montpellier associated member of the French Academy of Agriculture) emphasized the importance of recognizing the role and functions of village communities, relying on their culture and customary institutions.

Magali Maire (forestry engineer, CIHEAM Montpellier) moderated the session: “How to address the climate and societal challenges faced by Mediterranean forests?”

The works of PARMENIDES X notably led to the following main recommendations:

-In a context of climate change where the Mediterranean forest’s contribution to carbon storage is low, and where 1/3 of the value pertains to wood, it is crucial to support its adaptation process by considering its significant biological, social, and economic diversity, which is essential to deepen knowledge by enhancing data collection.

-In this context, fundamental research, applied research, and analysis of feedback from experiences must be strengthened.

Forestry education should also be more forward-thinking and expanded to social sciences to support the necessary adaptation of forests in connection with local populations and users, with particular attention to women and youth.

– In a context of environmental crisis where increasing importance is given to forests, it is necessary to build a constructive forest-society dialogue, considering the powerful symbolism associated with forests and trees.

-Finally, it is crucial to emphasize the identity of Mediterranean forests and share these recommendations within networks of organizations present at this conference and during the Conferences of the Parties of the United Nations Conventions on climate, biodiversity, and combating desertification.

NATAE : The horizon Europe Natae project launches a call for a service provider for living labs’ organisation in Egypt.

Posted on October 25, 2023

Context
NATAE (Fostering agroecology transition in North Africa through multi-actor, evaluation, and networking) is an awarded project under the Horizon Europe programme. Set in motion in December 2022, NATAE will run for the next three years with aim to foster the adoption of science-based, locallytailored and co-designed agroecology strategies in North Africa. This is planned by creating a comprehensive and quantitative baseline on agroecology, providing a shared understanding, multidimensional performance measures, and analyses of agroecology potential for meeting consumers demand on the market. Coordinated by CIHEAM Montpellier, NATAE gathers 22 partners including research and education institutions from around the Mediterranean, international organizations, specialized NGOs and local associations with the participation of the private sector1 […]

Description of the work package and tasks
Under NATAE’s Work Package 4, a Living-Lab is set up in Egypt in the area of Luxor in order to identify
and evaluate, through a multi-actor participatory approach, the most suitable AE strategies for various
farming systems. Using the framework developed in WP1 and methodology defined in WP2 and WP3,
WP4 will identify most promising combinations of AEP and AE strategies, in representative farming
systems in Luxor, through an interactive multi-actor approach.

The Living-Lab will gather actors from a range of complementary profiles and perspectives on
agroecological transition, including farmers, farm household members, industries, administrations,
NGOs, consumer organisations, research institutions and local advisory services. The governance of
the Living Lab will include a Representative Board consisting of 8-12 people who represent the
diversity of actors in the Living-Lab, and a number of stakeholder groups, as locally relevant.
Under WP4, an entity (hereinafter ‘Service provider’) specialized in multi-actor group organization
and moderation, with focus on North Africa, is needed to implement and monitor the Living-Lab in
Luxor and to join efforts with the WP leader (Wageningen University) and project coordinator (CIHEAMIAMM).

Deadline for submission: the 15th. November 2023 at 12 pm (Paris time)

Proposals should be submitted in English by email with the subject “NATAE Living-Lab Egypt.

TREES AND FORESTS FACING GLOBAL CHANGE: MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRIES AT THE FOREFRONT

Posted on October 23, 2023

The Groupe Interacadémique pour le Développement (GID) and the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), with the support of the Académie d’Agriculture de France, the European Forest Institute (EFI), and the technical support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), are organizing the 10th PARMENIDES Conference to be held at the CIHEAM Institute in Chania (Greece) on 24, 25 and 26 October 2023: “Trees and forests in the face of global change: Mediterranean Countries At The Forefront”.

Mediterranean countries face considerable challenges in securing the future of their woodlands. They have to cope with major climatic, demographic, socio-economic, and cultural changes, while at the same time meeting new expectations of society for a wide range of goods and services at the interface of several sectors (forestry, water, agriculture, industry, tourism, health).

The conference features nine round tables in three sessions:

  1. Strengthening Mediterranean forest ecosystems and their evolutionary potential
  2. Optimising synergies between sectors of activity and Mediterranean forest goods/services
  3. Responding to climate and societal challenges

The aim will be to set out the issues at stake (degradation, desertification, wildfire, bioeconomy, etc.), share recent data and experiences, and, lastly, put forward recommendations on prevention and adaptation, value enhancement, research and training, and regional cooperation.

The CIHEAM, in collaboration with the International Olive Council (IOC), is co-organizing an event for World Olive Day, focusing on the vital role of women in the olive industry. This event will take place on Thursday, November 23, at the IOC headquarters in Madrid, as part of the 118th session of its Council of Members.

Numerous activities will be organized to highlight the role of women working in the olive oil sector and their significance in passing on knowledge and expertise. On this occasion, the IOC and CIHEAM are inviting representatives from key women’s networks active in the global olive oil sector, as well as officials from international institutions working towards recognizing the role of women in society.

The event will feature olive oil tastings from different countries, traditional dishes made with olive oil and table olives, the screening of videos illustrating the entire production chain of olive products, the signing of a Manifesto, and an award ceremony for an international graphic works competition.

“World Olive Day was proclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) at its General Conference in 2019 and on the occasion of its 40th session. As the organization points out, this age-old “universal tree” is essential not only for the lands where it is grown but also for the communities of our shared planet as a whole.”
