Playing a central role in societies and economies of the region, the dairy sector has been facing many changes in recent years. The difficulties met by the different sectors of the dairy industry but also the positive initiatives that will enable, in the future, to overcome the new challenges are addressed in this issue. 

Placing the dairy sector at the crossroads of production, logistics, socio-economic and environmental challenges by providing global, regional and national insights, this Watch Letter n°35 features a series of scientific articles providing an update on the ongoing analyses and developments of the dairy sector in the Mediterranean.

The Document compiles a series of 18 articles dealing with innovative indicators and initiatives for Food Security in the Mediterranean countries. Particular attention has been paid to good practices, adaptation to climate change, sustainable food consumption models and agro-food chains. 

THE POST-2015 AND MEDITERRANEAN FUTURES

To move forward a greater development in the Mediterranean, the adoption of the Post-2015 Global Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals constitutes an important step towards sustainability strategies in the region. This is in a context where the future of the Euro-Mediterranean cooperation must be redefined, in agreement with the new regional priorities.

For these reasons, the Watch Letter n°34 proposes a high-level file about these strategic issues, aiming to bring a Mediterranean look on these Sustainable Development Goals and to provide a forward-looking reading guide to better prepare multilateral and multi-institutional cooperation in the region.

Crisis and Resilience in the Mediterranean

Environmental, economic and political crises that the Mediterranean is experiencing are multiple both in nature and in number and they contribute to the degradation of living conditions of populations and production and strike a blow against the efforts made in terms of food security and development. In this Watch Letter, the CIHEAM wishes to present various Mediterranean situations where agriculture, fisheries and food have a role to play in crisis prevention and management.
